Lake Como Boat Tours, Priced Against the Public Boat (2026)

Time, not money, is what decides this. A one-hour cruise out of Como never leaves the first basin, so it shows you the Clooney shore and Villa d'Este and nothing of the centre lake. The four-hour cruise reaches the towns everyone came for but gives you roughly forty minutes ashore in each.

A day of your own on the public boat gives you as long as you like in each town and no commentary at all.

The one we would book

For a first visit with a full day to spend, the honest pick is not a tour at all: a centre-lake day pass at $20.40 (€17.50) and the 09:00-ish boat out of Varenna, which puts you in Bellagio before the coach parties and leaves the afternoon for Menaggio. Book a tour where it buys something the timetable cannot: a small boat that pulls up to a villa gate, an evening departure after the last useful run, or a narrated hour when you only have a morning in Como.

The battello is the ordinary ship. It calls almost everywhere, carries bicycles at the crew's discretion, and is what the fare bands are quoted for. The servizio rapido is the hydrofoil or catamaran, and it is not a separate ticket: you pay the ordinary fare for your stretch plus a speed supplement of €1.50 to €5.50, the supplement carries no reduction of any kind, and it allows no intermediate stops.

The traghetto is the car ferry, and it runs on one line only, Cadenabbia to Bellagio to Menaggio to Varenna. Nothing else on the lake takes a car across.

• Battello: slow, calls everywhere, ticket valid all day on ordinary runs.
• Servizio rapido: ordinary fare plus supplement, valid on the day of issue and on that run only. Bicycles are not carried; medium and large dogs are not allowed on hydrofoils and catamarans.
• Traghetto: Cadenabbia–Bellagio–Menaggio–Varenna only. Journey times printed on the autumn 2026 weekday sheet: Cadenabbia to Bellagio 10 minutes, Menaggio to Varenna 15 minutes, Cadenabbia to Varenna 30 minutes.

Two towns the boat does not serve

Laglio, the village everyone asks about because of the Clooney house, appears in neither the summer nor the autumn 2026 timetable: it has no landing stage and there is no public boat to it. Its neighbours Moltrasio and Brienno are stops; Laglio is not. Brunate has no pier either and never had one, because it sits on the ridge above Como and is reached by the funicular or by road. A tour that promises the Clooney villa shows it to you from the water, which is the only way anyone sees it.

How the fares actually work

Lake Como does not sell named zones. Every pair of piers is assigned a stretch, 1 to 8, on the operator's Complete Chart of Stretch, and the stretch number is what you look up: Como–Bellagio is stretch 6 at $13.98 (€12.00), Como–Varenna is stretch 7 at $15.73 (€13.50), and the whole Bellagio–Varenna–Menaggio triangle is stretch 3 at $6.41 (€5.50) a leg. The day pass is sold for a stretch too, not for an area.

Three cells on the chart are marked U, an urban fare of $1.75 (€1.50): Como–Tavernola, Villa Carlotta–Cadenabbia and San Giovanni–Bellagio. The whole of it is on the ferry ticket page.

Villa entry is usually separate. A cruise that passes Villa del Balbianello is not a cruise into it: the FAI property charges its own admission, and only the bundles listed above include a ticket. The same applies to Villa Carlotta and Villa Monastero, both of which sell their own entry at the gate and online. Check the wording on the operator's page before you assume a garden is in the price.

On a self-drive rental, ask what the deposit is. The platform listing prices the hour; fuel policy, the security deposit and the number of people the hull is licensed for are the operator's own terms, and none of them appears in a listed price. The two Lake Como water-taxi firms that publish a tariff do state what is included: Taxi Boat Lake Como quotes per boat and lists a local English-speaking captain, fuel, fresh water and transaction fees inside the hourly rate.

Mooring is not a public right. Only one comune on the lake, Tremezzina, publishes a mooring framework at all: three municipal harbours, a berth regulation and an application form, with berths allocated by the Ufficio Gestione Territorio. Fees are not stated. Navigazione Laghi owns most of the public pontili and publishes only timetables and fares, with no rule or tariff for third-party use of its landing stages. If you rent a boat, the operator's own base is where it goes back.

The fast-service supplement catches people out. A day pass is valid on a fast run only if you also pay the supplement for that stretch, which is $5.83 (€5.00) on the Como–Bellagio band and $6.41 (€5.50) on Como–Varenna. And a ticket bought on board at a pier whose ticket office is open carries a flat €1.00 surcharge.

Luggage, dogs, bicycles and children

One item of luggage travels free if its longest side is under 0.60 m and its volume under 40 cubic decimetres; every larger item and every additional item is charged at the set fare per item. Small dogs under 50 cm at the withers travel free, larger dogs pay the reduced fare, and guide and service dogs travel free without limitation. Bicycles are not carried on fast runs at all, and on ordinary runs boarding one is at the crew's discretion; on the car ferry a bicycle costs €1.20 on its own or €6.70 including the rider's ticket.

Children under 4 travel free if they do not occupy a seat, one adult per three children, and children from 4 to 12 pay the reduced fare with the minimum fare applying. The Happy Family concession, valid to 31 December 2026, gives two adults buying two full-fare day passes up to two free children aged 4 to under 12, and the group must travel together.

The daily pattern has been described in the same terms since the Enciclopedia Italiana entry of 1931: the breva is the breeze that runs up the valleys by day, and the tivano is the night breeze that blows the opposite way. The squall winds that produce the lake's sudden changes are the montivi, known locally under names such as the Menaggino and the Molinatto. What no authority publishes is a speed, an onset time or a frequency for any of them: ARPA Lombardia releases anemometer data only on request, and every figure in knots circulating online comes from sailing and kitesurfing sites. So take the pattern as a shape, not a schedule, and treat a windy afternoon on an open boat as normal rather than exceptional.

On the public boat the refund rule is printed. You can claim a full refund at the issuing ticket office if the departure was delayed by at least 60 minutes or the run was cancelled, if the authorities barred you from travelling, or if boarding was impossible for want of room. If you simply change your mind, you have 30 minutes from the issuing time shown on the ticket, and a penalty of up to €3.00 per traveller is deducted. Lost or stolen tickets are never replaced, and the absence of a punch mark is not accepted as proof that a ticket went unused.

There is no published “missed departure” clause. What the operator does publish is that an ordinary-run ticket is valid for the whole day of issue, so a later ordinary boat will take you, while a fast-service ticket and its supplement are valid for that day and that run's conditions only. On a self-drive rental, the weather call is the operator's, and it is the one clause worth reading in full before you pay.

Como is the southern terminus. The piers are on the lakefront at Piazza Cavour and the operator numbers them rather than naming them, so a ticket may read “Pontile da COMO n. 3”. Como Lago railway station is a few minutes away on foot; Como San Giovanni, on the Milan–Chiasso line, is up the hill and about fifteen minutes' walk. Most one-hour tours leave from the same waterfront, not from the public pontili.

Bellagio has a passenger imbarcadero on Piazza Mazzini and a separate vehicle pier published as “Bellagio (Traghetto)”. If your ticket says traghetto, walk to the second one. Varenna is listed twice for the same reason, and the crossing to Bellagio takes 15 minutes on the ferry, 30 on the runs marked with the longer symbol.

Menaggio is one of the four car-ferry ports and a scheduled stop for both the ordinary boat and the fast service. Tremezzo and the Villa Carlotta stage sit on the same shore, and Villa Carlotta–Cadenabbia is one of the three urban-fare cells at $1.75 (€1.50). Lecco is on a different line altogether: the Bellagio–Lecco service is labelled Battelli, with no fast service at all, so nothing on the Lecco branch connects at hydrofoil speed. Colico is the northern terminus of the Como–Colico line and the fast service runs its full length.
