Orrido di Bellano
The Orrido di Bellano is the gorge the Pioverna torrent cut into the eastern shore of the lake, walked on a system of steel walkways bolted to sheer rock a few metres above the water. It is the one paid attraction on Lake Como that gets better in bad weather, it costs $9.32 (€8), and if you arrive holding a train ticket or a Navigazione Laghi boat ticket that drops to $5.83 (€5), which is the single most useful line on this page. There are five separate ticket ladders and three blocks of opening hours, and no stroller or wheelchair can go in. The rest of the eastern shore is on the Varenna page and the castle above it on Castello di Vezio.
Quick answer Price, the transport discount, hours and who cannot go in
The gorge costs $9.32 (€8), or $5.83 (€5) if you hold a train or Navigazione Laghi ticket. It opens 09:00 to 19:00 until 27 September and on shorter hours after that, with last admission 20 minutes before closing. Strollers and wheelchairs are not allowed.
Key takeaways
- Keep the ticket you arrived on. A train or Navigazione Laghi ticket cuts the entry by more than a third, and it is the only discount here that any ordinary visitor can trigger; the ferry page explains which boats call at this shore
- Five ticket combinations exist and most people need the cheapest. Ca' del Diavol, the pentagonal tower at the entrance, adds $2.33 to $8.16 depending on the day of the week and the month
- It is the right stop when the weather closes Castello di Vezio up the shore, and the castle entry ticket and a cruise from Varenna both fit the same day

Four of the five published combinations, priced from the venue's own hours-and-tickets page and from GetYourGuide, read in Q3 2026. The first row is the one nearly everyone should buy, and the second row is the reason to hold on to the ticket you travelled in on, because it costs less than three quarters of the standard entry.

What else is bookable on this shore
The gorge sells its own ticket at the gate, so nothing here is an Orrido admission. These are the other entries and the boats within a few kilometres of it, which is what most people build the rest of the day from. Prices in USD as listed by the operator, read in Q3 2026.

What the gorge is, and what the walkways do
An orrido is a gorge cut by water into rock, and Italian uses the word for the kind you would not want to fall into. This one has been made walkable without being made comfortable, which is why it works.
1.5 million years of water
The gorge was cut about 1.5 million years ago by the Pioverna torrent and by the Adda glacier working the same weakness in the rock. What that produced is a slot in the mountainside, narrow, high and permanently wet, with the torrent running along the bottom of it and daylight arriving in a strip overhead.
You walk it on a system of walkways anchored to the sheer walls rather than laid on the floor of the gorge, which is what makes the experience different from a riverside path. The water is below you, close enough to feel, and the rock is at arm's reach on both sides. The walkway system has recently been extended up to the highest waterfall, so the route now goes further into the gorge than older photographs of it show. In the evening the gorge is lit.
Why rain improves it
Almost everything on this lake is diminished by weather. A gorge is the exception: more water in the Pioverna means more noise, more spray and more of the effect the walkways were built to deliver. The surface gets slippery and the light gets darker, both of which are part of the point.
That makes the Orrido the obvious substitute on the days when Castello di Vezio up the shore closes because it is raining, which it does through November and every winter weekend. Two attractions four kilometres apart with exactly opposite weather rules is a genuinely useful thing to know about this shore, and the rainy day page collects the others.
What it is not
It is not a hike, and it is not long. It is a walkway circuit through a gorge that takes most people well under an hour, and the venue publishes no visit length at all. Anyone expecting a canyon trail will find it short; anyone expecting a viewing platform will find it more involving than they thought.
It is also not the same thing as the Orrido di Nesso, which is on the other side of the lake at Nesso, is free, has no ticket and no published opening hours, and is looked at from a bridge rather than walked into. That one is covered on the Nesso page, and confusing the two is the most common mistake in Lake Como planning that involves the word orrido.
The five ticket ladders, and the one that saves you money
The Comune di Bellano sells the gorge on its own and then in four bundles with three other sites in the town. Here is the whole structure in one table, because no other page prints it.
Note the weekday and weekend split on every combined ticket: the same bundle costs half as much again at a weekend, on a public holiday or at any time in August. The Orrido on its own is priced the same every day of the year.
| Ticket | Weekday, August excluded | Weekend, holiday and August | Ages 0 to 14 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orrido only | $9.32 (€8) | $9.32 (€8) | $5.83 (€5), ages 6 to 14 |
| Orrido with a train or boat ticket | $5.83 (€5) | $5.83 (€5) | $5.83 (€5) |
| Orrido and Ca' del Diavol | $11.65 (€10) | $17.48 (€15) | $5.83 (€5), accompanied |
| Orrido, San Nicolao and the Vitali museum | $13.98 (€12) | $13.98 (€12) | $5.83 (€5) |
| All four sites together | $17.48 (€15) | $23.30 (€20) | $5.83 (€5) |
The transport discount, in detail
A ticket for the train or for the Navigazione Laghi boat brings the Orrido entry down to $5.83 (€5) from $9.32 (€8). It is not framed as a promotion and it has no expiry printed against it; it sits in the venue's price list as a category alongside children and Touring Club members.
The reason it matters more here than a discount usually would is that Bellano is a place most visitors reach by exactly those two means. The railway on the eastern shore runs through the town, and the scheduled boats call at its pier. If you came by either, you are already holding the thing that saves you $3.49, and the mistake is throwing it away or leaving it in the hotel. Keep it in a pocket, not in a bag you check.
Touring Club Italiano members pay $6.99 (€6). Groups of fifteen or more pay $8.16 (€7) each with one leader free per fifteen, and must book. School groups of children aged 6 to 14 pay $5.83 (€5) a pupil with accompanying teachers free. Children aged 0 to 5, residents of the Comune di Bellano and Disability Card holders with a companion go free.
Hours in three date blocks, and the season nobody ends
The venue publishes its year in three blocks rather than as a season, and the last of the three has no end date at all. That is a genuine gap rather than an oversight on our part.
Until 27 September the gorge is open every day from 09:00 to 19:00. From 28 September to 24 October it runs Monday to Friday 09:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 19:00. From 25 October it runs Monday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 17:00. Last admission is always 20 minutes before closing.
What happens after that is not published. The table simply runs on from 25 October with no closing date and no winter shutdown stated. The venue separately runs an Orrido Magic Christmas Lights edition in December, and archive pages for the 2021 to 2024 editions are online, with no page yet for a 2026 edition. So the honest position is this: the gorge appears to stay open through the winter on the shorter hours, a Christmas edition has run in each of the last several years, and the Comune di Bellano publishes nothing that confirms either for the coming winter.
Booking is required for groups over fifteen, for school groups and for guided visits. Nothing needs booking for an individual, and the ticket desk at the gate sells on the day.
| Date block | Monday to Friday | Saturday and Sunday | Last admission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Until 27 September | 09:00 to 19:00 | 09:00 to 19:00 | 18:40 |
| 28 September to 24 October | 09:00 to 18:00 | 09:00 to 19:00 | 20 minutes before closing |
| From 25 October, no end date published | 10:00 to 17:00 | 09:00 to 17:00 | 16:40 |
Ca' del Diavol, San Nicolao and the Vitali museum
Three other sites are sold with the gorge. Only one of them is at the gorge, and it is the one that carries the surcharge.
Ca' del Diavol, the devil's house, is a three-storey pentagonal tower standing at the entrance to the Orrido. Inside it is a multimedia route on the history of the Bellano area. Adding it to the gorge costs $2.33 more on a weekday outside August and $8.16 more at a weekend, on a holiday or in August, which is a large spread for one small building and the reason to decide before you reach the desk rather than at it.
San Nicolao and the Museo Giancarlo Vitali are elsewhere in the town, and they are what the $13.98 (€12) and the $17.48 (€15) and $23.30 (€20) combinations buy. Vitali was a painter from Bellano, and the museum in his name is the town's own cultural institution rather than a lake attraction.
The dog rules differ site by site, and this is the detail that catches people out. Dogs of any size are allowed in the Orrido itself. Dogs are not allowed in Ca' del Diavol at all. Small dogs in a carrier or a bag are allowed in San Nicolao and in the Museo Giancarlo Vitali. So a visitor with a large dog can buy the gorge and cannot use the combined ticket, whatever the desk sells them.
- Ca' del Diavol: three-storey pentagonal tower at the gorge entrance, multimedia history route, no dogs
- San Nicolao and the Museo Giancarlo Vitali: elsewhere in the town, small dogs in a carrier only
- The Orrido itself: dogs of any size welcome
- The weekend and August surcharge applies to every combined ticket, never to the Orrido alone
Getting there, and why the transport ticket matters twice
Bellano sits on the eastern shore between Varenna and Colico, on both the railway and the boat route, which is unusual on this lake and is what makes the gorge easy to reach without a car.
The venue is run by the Comune di Bellano at Via Vittorio Veneto 23, and it publishes no walking time from the railway station or from the ferry pier. Both are in the town and the gorge is signposted from the lakefront; treat any figure you read as an estimate, ours included, because the venue states none.
The transport ticket matters twice over. First, it is how you get here without driving a lake road that is narrow, busy and short of parking. Second, it is what brings the entry down to $5.83 (€5) at the desk. Nothing else on this lake rewards arriving by public transport with a discount at the gate.
By boat, the scheduled Navigazione Lago di Como services call at Bellano on the eastern shore run. Which service that is matters: the battello calls at everything and is slow, the servizio rapido is faster and carries a supplement payable on top of the fare, and the car ferry is a different animal entirely that runs only between Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio and does not come here. The ferry page sets all three out.
By train, the eastern-shore line from Milan through Lecco to Sondrio and Tirano runs along this side of the lake and stops in the town, which makes the Orrido one of the few attractions on Lake Como that a visitor based in Milan can reach without a boat at all. Milan to Lake Como covers the connections.
- Run by the Comune di Bellano, Via Vittorio Veneto 23, 23822 Bellano
- No walking time from the station or the pier is published by the venue
- Boat: scheduled Navigazione Lago di Como services on the eastern shore; no car ferry
- Train: the Milan to Lecco to Tirano line stops in the town
- Either ticket cuts the entry to $5.83 (€5), so keep it in a pocket
How Much Time To Give The Orrido
The venue states no visit length. These three routings are ours, built from the length of the walkway system and what the combined tickets add.
The walkways are the whole of the Orrido, and they are not long. What changes the length of the visit is whether you buy the tower, how many people are on the walkway in front of you and how long you stand at the highest waterfall.
| Routing | What you get | What it skips | Door to door |
|---|---|---|---|
| The gorge alone | The full walkway system to the highest waterfall and back, on the $9.32 (€8) ticket or $5.83 (€5) with a transport ticket | Ca' del Diavol and the two town sites | 30 to 40 minutes |
| Gorge and tower | The walkways plus the multimedia history route in the pentagonal Ca' del Diavol at the entrance | San Nicolao and the Vitali museum | About an hour and a half, on $11.65 (€10) midweek or $17.48 (€15) at a weekend |
| The whole Bellano ticket | All four sites: the gorge, the tower, San Nicolao and the Museo Giancarlo Vitali | Nothing in the town | Half a day, on $17.48 (€15) midweek or $23.30 (€20) at a weekend |
The Orrido In Five Dates
A gorge older than the lake it drains into, and a visitor attraction whose published calendar has three edges and no end.
-
About 1.5 million years ago
The gorge is cut
The Pioverna torrent and the Adda glacier work the same weakness in the rock and open the slot the walkways now hang in.
-
Recent seasons
The walkways reach the highest waterfall
The system anchored to the sheer walls has been extended, so the route now goes further in than older photographs show.
-
27 September
The end of the long summer hours
Until this date the gorge runs 09:00 to 19:00 every day.
-
24 October
The end of the middle block
The 28 September to 24 October block runs 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and to 19:00 at weekends.
-
From 25 October
Shorter hours, and no published end
10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays, 09:00 to 17:00 at weekends, with no season end and no winter closure date stated anywhere. A Christmas lights edition has run in past years.
The geology and the walkway description come from orridobellano.eu; the three date blocks and the last-admission rule from its hours-and-tickets page. Both read in Q3 2026. The old domain orridodibellano.it now redirects to orridobellano.eu, so an old bookmark still works.
Five Things Most Visitors Do Not Know About The Orrido di Bellano
All five come off the venue's own hours-and-tickets page, and each one changes something practical about the visit.
- A train or Navigazione Laghi ticket cuts the entry from $9.32 (€8) to $5.83 (€5), and it is listed as a standing price category rather than a promotion [orridobellano.eu, orari e biglietti, read in Q3 2026]. - Strollers and wheelchairs are not allowed. The venue describes the route as simple and suitable for everyone and then rules both out, because of the stairs and the narrow passages [orridobellano.eu]. - Dogs of any size are welcome in the gorge and banned from Ca' del Diavol, so the combined ticket is useless to anyone walking a large dog [orridobellano.eu]. - The combined tickets cost half as much again at weekends, on holidays and throughout August, while the plain Orrido ticket never changes price [orridobellano.eu]. - The published hours run open-ended from 25 October with no season end and no winter closure date anywhere on the site, and the only December content is an archive of past Christmas lights editions [orridobellano.eu].
At The Orrido di Bellano: What To Do, And What Not To
Every line here is argued somewhere above, in the form you can act on the morning you go.
Do
- Keep your train or boat ticket in a pocket and show it at the desk, because it takes the entry down to $5.83 (€5)
- Come on a wet day. This is the one paid attraction on the lake that is better in rain
- Wear shoes with grip. The walkways are permanently damp and the rock drips
- Decide about Ca' del Diavol before you reach the desk, because the surcharge swings from $2.33 to $8.16 with the day of the week
- Pair it with Castello di Vezio four kilometres south, whose weather rules are the exact opposite of this one's
Don't
- Don't bring a stroller or a wheelchair. Neither is admitted, and the reason is stairs and narrow passages
- Don't buy a combined ticket if you are walking a large dog; Ca' del Diavol will not admit it
- Don't arrive within 20 minutes of closing, which is the published last admission all year
- Don't confuse it with the Orrido di Nesso on the western shore, which is free, has no ticket and is viewed from a bridge
- Don't assume a winter visit: the hours table runs open-ended from 25 October and no closure date is published either way

How much does the Orrido di Bellano cost?
$9.32 (€8) for the gorge alone, or $5.83 (€5) if you show a train ticket or a Navigazione Laghi boat ticket at the desk. Ages 6 to 14 pay $5.83 (€5), Touring Club members $6.99 (€6), and groups of fifteen or more $8.16 (€7) each with one leader free. Children aged 0 to 5, residents of the Comune di Bellano and Disability Card holders with a companion go free. Adding Ca' del Diavol takes it to $11.65 (€10) midweek or $17.48 (€15) at a weekend. Every entry price on the lake is on the tickets index.
How long does it take to walk the Orrido di Bellano?
The venue publishes no visit length. Our routing is 30 to 40 minutes on the walkways, out to the highest waterfall and back, and about an hour and a half if you add the multimedia route inside Ca' del Diavol at the entrance. It is a short visit by design, which is why it works as half of a day rather than as a day: the other half is usually Castello di Vezio or the boat.
What are the Orrido di Bellano opening hours?
Three blocks. Until 27 September it opens every day 09:00 to 19:00. From 28 September to 24 October it runs Monday to Friday 09:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 19:00. From 25 October it runs Monday to Friday 10:00 to 17:00 and Saturday and Sunday 09:00 to 17:00, with no end date published. Last admission is 20 minutes before closing throughout. The full grid is in hours in three date blocks.
How do you reach the Orrido di Bellano?
By train on the eastern-shore line from Milan through Lecco towards Tirano, which stops in the town, or by the scheduled Navigazione Lago di Como boats that call at its pier. The car ferry does not come here; it runs only between Bellagio, Cadenabbia, Varenna and Menaggio. The venue publishes no walking time from either the station or the pier. Coming by either also cuts the entry to $5.83 (€5), which is covered in getting there and on the ferry page.
Can you take a pushchair into the Orrido di Bellano?
No. The venue describes the route as simple and suited to everyone and then states plainly that access with strollers and wheelchairs is not permitted, because of the stairs and the narrow passages on the walkways. Families with small children should plan to carry them. What else on the lake works with a pram is set out on Lake Como with kids and on the accessibility page.
Can you swim in the Orrido di Bellano?
Nothing published by the venue offers swimming, and the visit is a walkway route above the torrent rather than access to the water. What is published is the ticket, the hours and the last admission. If swimming is the point of the day, the lidos and the free shoreline are covered on swimming and beaches; the gorge is a forty-minute walk, not a bathing spot.
Can you bring a dog to the Orrido di Bellano?
Into the gorge, yes, dogs of any size. Into Ca' del Diavol, no dogs at all. Into San Nicolao and the Museo Giancarlo Vitali, only small dogs in a carrier or a bag. That means a combined ticket is worth less than it looks to anyone walking a large dog. Among the paid sites on this lake, Castello di Vezio is the other one that welcomes dogs of any size on a leash.
Where the gorge fits in a day on the lake
Treat it as the wet-weather half of an eastern-shore day, and as the reason to keep your train ticket. The pattern that works: the morning at Castello di Vezio if the sky is clear, lunch in Varenna, then one stop north to the gorge in the afternoon. Reverse it when it rains, because the castle will very likely be shut and the gorge will be at its best.
From Milan it is one of the few Lake Como attractions reachable without a boat at all, on the Lecco line, which makes it a genuine option on a day when the weather has ruined the plan you actually wanted; Milan to Lake Como has the connections. Everything else on the lake that charges an entry is indexed on things to do, and the whole Lake Como guide starts from the homepage.
